A slim, grass green bush-cricket with the pointed head characteristic of coneheads, and short wings

Frequents short marshland vegetation, spending its time sunning itself and hiding when disturbed

Common along southern english coasts and estuaries, and also inland marshes

Recognition

Grass green abdomen with a dark brown stripe down its back; pale brown wings do not reach the end of its body

Body length up to 2 cm; female's brown ovipositor is half as long again and strongly upcurved

Song is a soft high-pitched buzz that only carries a short distance

Lifecycle

Eggs are laid into the stems of grasses, sedges and rushes in summer and overwinter; nymphs emerge in May/June
